وَكَذَٰلِكَ جَعَلۡنَا لِكُلِّ نَبِيٍّ عَدُوّٗا شَيَٰطِينَ ٱلۡإِنسِ وَٱلۡجِنِّ يُوحِي بَعۡضُهُمۡ إِلَىٰ بَعۡضٖ زُخۡرُفَ ٱلۡقَوۡلِ غُرُورٗاۚ
Qatadah, Mujahid and Alhasan said: "There are devils among mankind, as there are among jinn." Malik bin Dinar said: "The devils from mankind are more dangerous to me than those from the jinn because I can rid of the latter by seeking refuge with Allah, but the former comes visibly and pulls me into committing sins." Al-Baghawi: 2/56.
Question: Are there devils among mankind as there are among jinn? Which are more dangerous?
يُوحِي بَعۡضُهُمۡ إِلَىٰ بَعۡضٖ زُخۡرُفَ ٱلۡقَوۡلِ غُرُورٗاۚ
Meaning: They make fair-seeming to one another the falsehood to which they call people, and they come up with flowery words and depict it in the best image, so as to deceive the foolish who do not understand the reality of things. Thus, the foolish are deceived by these fancy words and flowery phrases, so they believe truth to be falsehood and falsehood to be true. Al-Saadi: 269-270.
Question: Why do the people of falsehood use fancy words and flowery phrases?
وَلِتَصۡغَىٰٓ إِلَيۡهِ أَفۡـِٔدَةُ ٱلَّذِينَ لَا يُؤۡمِنُونَ بِٱلۡأٓخِرَةِ وَلِيَرۡضَوۡهُ
Allah states that those who disbelieve in the Hereafter will incline toward the words of enemies of Messengers. Thus, disobeying the Messengers and disbelief in the Hereafter are correlated. Whoever does not believe in the Hereafter, will incline toward the deception of enemies of the Messengers as it is the case with many disbelievers and hypocrites in this nation and in others. Ibn Taimyah: 3/89-90.
Question: Disobeying the Messengers and disbelieving in the Hereafter are correlated. Explain.
وَتَمَّتۡ كَلِمَتُ رَبِّكَ صِدۡقٗا وَعَدۡلٗاۚ لَّا مُبَدِّلَ لِكَلِمَٰتِهِۦۚ وَهُوَ ٱلسَّمِيعُ ٱلۡعَلِيمُ ١١٥
(And the word of your Lord has been fulfilled in truth and in justice), Allah sent His Messengers with Knowledge and justice; therefore, the greater one's attainment of knowledge and justice, the closer he will be to what the Messengers were sent with. Ibn Taimyah: 3/93.
Question: What are the things that determine your closeness to what the Messengers (p) were sent with?
وَإِن تُطِعۡ أَكۡثَرَ مَن فِي ٱلۡأَرۡضِ يُضِلُّوكَ عَن سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِۚ إِن يَتَّبِعُونَ إِلَّا ٱلظَّنَّ وَإِنۡ هُمۡ إِلَّا يَخۡرُصُونَ ١١٦
The reason that misguided people are a majority is the fact that truth and guidance require sound minds, virtuous souls, reflection on what is good and bad, giving precedence to truth over whim, rationality over desire and wishing the best to all people. If any of these traits is repressed, then misguidance would infiltrate the soul commensurate with the extent of that repression. Ibn Ashur: 8/25.
Question: The majority of people on earth are misguided. Why?
وَإِن تُطِعۡ أَكۡثَرَ مَن فِي ٱلۡأَرۡضِ يُضِلُّوكَ عَن سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِۚ١١٦
This verse indicates that neither truth is determined by abundancy of followers, nor falsehood is determined by scarcity of followers. Rather, the reality is something other than that, for the people of truth are the fewest in number, but are the greatest in esteem and reward before Allah. Al-Saadi: 270.
Question: It is common, nowadays, for one to believe views of the majority rather than that of the minority. What is the rule of Sharia on this matter?
فَكُلُواْ مِمَّا ذُكِرَ ٱسۡمُ ٱللَّهِ عَلَيۡهِ إِن كُنتُم بِـَٔايَٰتِهِۦ مُؤۡمِنِينَ ١١٨
(If you are believers in His verses) this means that you will abide if you follow Allah's commands and rules, since believing in the rules of Allah necessitates adhering and following them. Ibn Atiyah:2/338.
Question: After commanding to eat that upon which the name of Allah has been mentioned, the verse is concluded with mentioning the belief in Allah's verses. Why?
