Meaning: We have rewarded Abraham () for his obedience, sincerity in believing in the Oneness of his Lord, and migrating from his people who were disbelievers - by elevating him in ranks, giving him his reward in this life and giving to him children who were selected as Prophets with honored descendants who were preferred over the rest of the people [of their times]. Al-Tabari: 11/507.
Question: Whoever gives up something for the sake of Allah, Allah will give him something much better instead. Explain in light of this verse
Allah elevates one who has knowledge above other people in ranks, especially the scholar who acts upon his knowledge and teaches others; Allah makes him a leader for the people to follow, according to his situation, whereby his deeds are watched, his footsteps followed, and his light is sought so that people may walk in the light of his knowledge. Al-Saadi: 263.
Question: What is the reason for elevating Abraham () in ranks over his people?
Meaning: We elevate in ranks whom We will with knowledge, understanding, virtue and wisdom, as We did for Abraham when he became guided, and debated his people over the Oneness of Allah. Al-Baghawi: 2/41.
Question: How does the believer become elevated in ranks?
This was a reward for Abraham (), who left his people and migrated from their land, so that he could worship Allah alone. Allah compensated Abraham () for leaving his people and tribe when He gave him righteous children of his own, who would follow his religion so that his eyes would be comforted by them. Ibn Kathir: 2/147.
Question: The children were a reward for the righteousness of Abraham (). How?
(And if they were to associate others with Him), hypothetically speaking, (all their deeds would have been nullified) for ascribing partners to Allah invalidates all good deeds and incurs eternity in Hellfire. If these chosen elite had ascribed partners to Allah -which is unlikely as they are far above doing such a thing- all their good deeds would come to nothing, and this result would apply even more to others. Al-Saadi: 264.
Question: Ascribing partners to Allah, even by righteous people, invalidates all good deeds. Explain in light of this verse.
Meaning: If they worshiped other than Me, I would have nullified their deeds, however, I protected them from shirk. Al-Qurtubi: 8/451.
Question: What is the punishment for associating others with Allah while having good deeds?
Meaning: Follow -O noble Messenger- in the footsteps of these chosen Prophets, and tread their path. The Prophet (ﷺ) complied with this command, and followed the guidance of the Messengers who came before him; he acquired all perfect attributes and virtues by means of which he surpassed all people, and was the leader of the Messengers, foremost among the pious -may the blessings and peace of Allah be upon him and upon all of them. Al-Saadi: 264.
Question: This verse indicates that the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) takes precedence over all other Messengers. How?
