What is meant by listening in this case is listening with the heart and accepting; as for merely hearing, this is something that is done by both the righteous and the immoral. Proof is established against all those who are accountable when they hear the revelations of Allah, after which there is no excuse left for not accepting the message. Al-Saadi: 255.
Question: In hearing sermons, what is the difference between the righteous and the heedless?
This refers to the disbelievers because their hearts are dead, therefore, Allah resembles them to dead corpses. Ibn Kathir:2/124.
Question: What is the resemblance between a disbeliever and a dead person?
All things, great and small, are written in the Preserved Tablet (Al-Lawh Al-Mahfooth) as they are decreed, and all things will come to pass in accordance with what the Pen wrote. This verse indicates that the Preserved Tablet is the record of all things that will happen. This is the first stage of the divine Will and Decree, of which there are four stages: The all-encompassing knowledge of Allah; His Book that contains all that which exists; His Will that is applicable to all things; and His creation of all created things. Al-Saadi: 255.
Question: Everything that happens in your life goes through four stages. What are they?
Allah Has censured two groups, first: Those who when they are struck with hardships, they do not plead with Allah, do not humble themselves to Him nor repent from their sins as Allah says, (And We sent messengers to nations before you and seized them with poverty and hardship, so that they may humble themselves ` If only they had humbled themselves when Our affliction came upon them, but their hearts were hardened, and satan made their misdeeds appealing to them). Second: Those who plead with Allah and repent to Him during hardships, but after He removes their hardships, they turn away. The praised group, however, are those who plead with Allah, and repent to Him at all times, during hardships and comfort. Ibn Taimyah: 3/24-25.
Question: List the situations of people during times of hardships and comfort?
(And seized them with poverty and hardship), this was a disciplinary action. (If only they): this is an offer and encouragement, which proves that humbling oneself during hardships is beneficial. Ibn Juzay: 1/270.
Question: In light of this verse, explain the importance of humbling oneself during hardships?
We opened up the doors to everything that was closed to them before. (Until just when they were happiest with what they had been given) they became reckless and conceited, and thought that this bounty was endless and a sign of Allah's love for them. (We caught them): We destroyed them. (suddenly): abruptly and unexpectedly. Al-Qurtubi: 8/379.
Question: From this verse, describe how Allah gradually leads heedless people?
Al-Hasan Al-Basri said: "Whomever Allah gives provision and he thinks that Allah is not testing him, has no wisdom. Whoever has little provision and thinks that Allah will not look at (provide for) him, has no wisdom." He then recited this verse. Ibn Kathir:2/126.
Question: How does a Muslim deal with his financial fluctuations?
