They are addressed as "The people of the Book", alluding to the fact that they did not adhere to their Book. Ibn Ashur: 6/50.
Question: Why are the people of the Book addressed as such, in this verse?
Extremism in religion is when a follower of a religion exceeds the limits set by his religion. The Jews were commanded to follow the Torah and honor their Messenger, but they exceeded that to resenting other Messengers like Jesus () and Muhammad (ﷺ). The Christians were commanded to follow and honor Jesus () but they exceeded that by claiming his divinity while denying the Prophethood of Muhammad (ﷺ). Ibn Ashur: 6/51.
Question: What is extremism in religion?
These words imply three things, two of which are prohibitions: it is forbidden to tell lies about Allah and to speak without knowledge about His Names, Attributes, Actions, Religion and Messengers. The third thing is a command, which is to speak the truth in these matters. Al-Saadi: 216.
Question: These few words contain great meanings, what are they?
The Prophet (r) said: "He who has, in his heart, an atom's weight of arrogance will not enter Paradise." Someone said: "O Messenger of Allah, a man likes to wear beautiful clothes and shoes?" The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "Allah is Beautiful and He loves beauty. Arrogance is ridiculing and rejecting the truth and despising people."Al-Alusi: 6/293.
Question: What is the definition of arrogance? What is its consequence?
(And will increase them out of His bounty): The increase in Paradise entails gardens in which there is that which no eye has seen, no ear has heard, nor has it ever entered the mind of man. Al-Baghawi: 1/627.
Question: What is the multiplication of reward and increase in Paradise?
The use of Lordship in, (Your Lord), with the possessive determiner (your) is to show Allah's graciousness to His servants, and indicating that His revelation is for their betterment and refinement. Al-Alusi: 6/295.
Question: The use of the term (Your Lord) has a distinctive bearing. What is it?
Meaning: Whoever does not believe in Allah, hold fast to Him and adhere to His Book, Allah will deprive them of His mercy and grace, and leave them to their own devices. Hence, they will not be guided; rather they will go far astray, as a punishment to them for not believing. Thus, all they will gain is doom and loss. Al-Saadi: 217.
Question: What it the punishment of one who does not believe in Allah nor hold fast to Him?
