(Rushing ahead), they will not turn their heads to the right or left, nor will they know on which their feet step. (Their glance does not come back to them), their eyes will not blink due to intensity of what they see, which will keep them distracted. (And their hearts are void), their hearts will leave their chests and reach their throats; not exiting through their mouths nor returning back. Al-Baghawi: 2/568.
Question: Have you seen wrongdoers, their toughness and hardened hearts against the believers in this world? Describe their condition on the Day of Resurrection.
They will stare continuously, and will not blink for an instant because they will be going through tremendous horror, worry, and fear of what is going to strike them. Ibn Kathir: 2/522.
Question: On the Day of Resurrection, the wrongdoers will stare continuously and will not blink. Why?
Meaning: Their hearts are void of comprehension and understanding due to the immense bewilderment and astonishment. In Arabic, the word (void) is used to describe a person who is either a coward or a fool by saying: "His heart is void", which means he has no power nor a good mind. Al-Alusi: 14/310.
Question: How does the heart become void?
Meaning: The land of Thamud and akin to that; did you learn a lesson from their ruined dwellings after you saw what we did to them. Al-Qurtubi: 12/163.
Question: What do you say to one who passes by the ruined dwellings of perished people but does not learn a lesson from that?
(So never think that Allah will fail in His promise to His messengers), which is the promise of defeating the disbelievers. In this verse, the promise is mentioned before the Messengers to indicate the absolute fulfillment of the promise. The Messengers are mentioned next to emphasize the fact that Allah never fails in His promise to anyone, let alone His Messengers who are the best among His creations. The promise is mentioned first to indicate absolute fulfillment, and the Messengers are mentioned next for their special status. Ibn Juzay: 1/448.
Question: In this verse, the promise is mentioned before the Messengers (His promise to His messengers). Why?
Each disbeliever will be bound to his devil in a chain; moreover, it is said that their hands and feet will be bound to their necks in irons and shackles. Al-Baghawi: 2/571.
Question: Describe how criminals will be gathered on the Day of Resurrection.
For Allah knows everything and nothing ever escapes His observation. Verily, His power over all of His creation is the same as His power over one creature. Ibn Kathir: 2/525.
Question: Allah's reckoning is described as swift. Why?
