Since the delights and pleasures of this world are immediate, and man is fond of that which is immediate, whereas the eternal bliss of the hereafter is deferred. It is for this reason that you are negligent about the hereafter, and you ignore it as if you were not created for it, and as if this worldly realm were the eternal realm for the sake of which you are spending your precious lives and striving for it night and day. Thus, facts are turned upside down, which results in loss. Al-Saadi: 900.
Question: What is the reason for mankind to love this fleeting world and neglect the Hereafter?
That is, anyone who could perform Ruqyah (supplication for healing), because they have lost all hope of regular ways of healing, so there is nothing left but to pursue divine means. Al-Saadi: 900.
Question: They look for one to perform Ruqyah instead of looking for a doctor. Why?
Meaning: He swaggered in pride. It is said that he moved slowly, hence he was too slow to respond to the call of truth. Al-Qurtubi: 21/437.
Question: What is the censured walk mentioned in this verse?
Making man's origins known to him so he would realize that he has no right to be arrogant or assume supremacy. Moreover, he should not be deluded by Allah's hidden kindness, care, and honor toward him, and believes that he is entitled to all that and deserved it. The fact remains: (Whatever blessing you have, it is from Allah)[16:53]. Al-Biqai: 21/123.
Question: What induces an ignorant person to be arrogant?
(From a drop of mixed fluids), an insignificant fluid that is regarded as off-putting. (In order to test him) thereby, to see whether he would pay attention to how he was in his initial state, or he would forget it and become arrogant. Al-Saadi: 900.
Question: This verse shows man how to rid of conceitedness. Explain.
Meaning: We gave him the faculties of hearing and sight so that he would be able to use them for obedience and disobedience. Ibn Kathir: 4/453.
Question: Allah mentions the faculties of hearing and sight before saying: (Indeed, We showed him the way, whether he is grateful or ungrateful). Why?
In the Arabic text, the word (grateful) is not emphasized while the word (ungrateful) is, because true gratefulness to Allah cannot be reached, and his gratefulness for Allah's blessings will always be little, hence, the emphasis would not be applicable. Ungratefulness, however, is emphasized to indicate that he is abundantly ungrateful for Allah's blessings and kindness toward him. Al-Qurtubi: 21/450
