This verse, (those who have said, "Our Lord is Allah" and then remained steadfast), combines the two fundamentals of Islamic perfection, where this part, (those who have said, "Our Lord is Allah") indicates mental perfection, which recognizing the truth in order to follow it and knowing what is good in order to practice it. This part, (and then remained steadfast) indicates the foundation of righteous deeds, which is standing firm on the right course. Ibn Ashur: 24/283.
Question: This verse, (those who have said, "Our Lord is Allah" and then remained steadfast) combines the two fundamentals of human perfection. How?
Omar bin Al-Khattab (t) said: "Remaining steadfast is to adhere to what is commanded and what is prohibited, and not evade like a fox." Othman bin Affan (t) said: "Those who sincerely devoted their deeds to Allah." Ali bin Abi Talib (t) said: "Those who performed what is obligated." Al-Baghawi: 4/65-66.
Question: Explain the intended meaning of the reality of remaining steadfast in this verse.
Meaning: The angels that descend upon them with good tidings, saying: (We are your allies). Mujahid said: It means that we are your associates who were with you in worldly life. On the Day of Resurrection, they will say: We will not part ways with you until we take you to Paradise. Al-Qurtubi: 18/418.
Question: This verse describes a benefit for the believers from the world of angels. What is it?
Meaning: He himself follows what he says, so it benefits him as well as others. He is not one of those who enjoin good but do not do it, or forbid evil yet they do it, rather, he does good and avoids doing evil, and he calls people to their Creator, the Almighty. Ibn Kathir: 4/102.
Question: The truthful preacher has a sign. What is it?
Meaning: No one is enabled to attain this good characteristic (except those who are patient), and make themselves endure with patience what they dislike, and force themselves to do what Allah loves. For people are naturally inclined to respond to mistreatment in like manner, and not to forgive, let alone react with kindness. But if a person makes himself to be patient and obeys the command of his Lord, while being aware of the immense reward that this attitude brings, understands that responding in kind to the one who mistreats him will not benefit him in the slightest and will only make the enmity worse. Moreover, treating him kindly will not detract from his status, for whoever humbles himself for the sake of Allah, Allah will raise him in rank, then kindness toward others will become easy for him and he will do it with pleasure and find delight in it. Al-Saadi: 749.
Question: This status is granted to those who are patient and of a great portion of good. Why?
Since it is one of the characteristics of the elite among humankind, by means of which a person attains high status in this world and the hereafter, it is one of the greatest of good characteristics. Al-Saadi: 749.
Question: This verse describes a sign of a great characteristic of the elite among humankind to Allah. What is it?
After Allah mentioned how to respond to human enemies, which is by responding to maltreatment with kindness, Allah now teaches us how to ward off the jinn enemy, which is by seeking refuge and protection with Allah from his evil. (And if a prompting from satan stirs you up), any time you feel any of the promptings of satan - namely his whispers, making evil fair-seeming to you, discouraging you from doing good, tempting you to commit some sins or making you obey some of his instructions, (seek refuge with Allah), ask Him while expressing your need of Him to give you refuge and protect you from satan. Al-Saadi: 750.
Question: How can we ward off the enemy from jinn?
