They submitted and followed Allah's command. Ibn Abbas said: He laid him on one side of his face; the forehead is between the two sides. Al-Baghawi: 3/667.
Question: What does this expression indicate, (they both submitted)?
Meaning: The purpose of your dream has been fulfilled by your laying down your son to sacrifice him. Ibn Kathir: 4/17.
Question: How did he fulfill his vision despite not sacrificing his son?
Abraham (u) was the close friend of the Most Gracious, and close friendship is the highest level of love; it is a level of love in which there is no room to love anything else, a level which dictates that one be attached to one's beloved with all of one’s heart. As part of Abraham’s heart became attached to his son Ishmael, Allah wanted to make his entire heart attached to Him, and to test how sincere and strong the bond of close friendship was. So, He commanded him to sacrifice the one whose love had competed with the love of his Lord. But when Abraham gave precedence to the love of Allah over his own desires, and resolved to sacrifice his son, all attachment to competitors was removed from his heart, whereupon there was no longer any benefit in sacrificing him. Al-Saadi: 706.
Question: How was this incident a trial and purification of Abraham's (u) heart?
It was great it was the ransom for Ishmael, one of the sublime acts of worship, a means of drawing closer to Allah, and a precedent to be followed until the Day of Resurrection. Al-Saadi: 706.
Question: The ransom was described as (great). Why?
Abraham (u) supplicated by saying: (And grant me an honorable mention among the later generations) [26:84], hence, Allah left for him favorable mention among later generations, while He left evil mention for Pharaoh and the likes of him. Al-Tabari: 21/91.
Question: When Allah is pleased with someone, He leaves a sign for him after his death. What is it?
This indicates that the evilness or goodness of a person is not linked to his creed or lineage. A pious person may beget a wicked son, and the opposite is true. Moreover, corrupted offspring do not diminish their fathers, because what is important is one's good morals and righteous deeds. As for the righteousness of the fathers, it compliments the good offsprings and motivates them to attain the best morals. Ibn Ashur: 23/162.
Question: The wickedness or goodness of a person is not linked to his creed or lineage. Explain.
When Allah mentions the blessing and abundance of the offspring, He says that some did good and some did evil, and those who did evil would not be availed by the fact that their forefathers were Prophets. Even though the Jews descend from Isaac and the Arabs descend from Ishmael, the fact remains that good and evil, believers and disbelievers are all not the same. Al-Qurtubi: 18/83.
Question: Will the righteousness of your father be suffice you? Will his wickedness harm you?
