The believer is like the living, while the disbeliever is like the dead. (Indeed, Allah causes to hear whom He wills), that is the guidance of Allah to whomever He wills. (But you cannot make to hear those in the graves), that is the disbelievers not listening to evidence and admonishments, hence, He likens them to the dead who lack feeling. Ibn Juzay: 2/215.
Question: This verse presents an eloquent analogy between the disbelievers and the dead. Explain the similarities between them.
The biggest deprivation stemming from disbelief is being deprived of benefit from the most eloquent and truthful word, which is the Quran. Ibn Ashur: 22/295.
Question: What is the biggest deprivation for the disbeliever in this world?
Allah mentions His creation of things and their opposites -from which the origin and substance are the same, yet there are variations and differences that are visible and well known- so as to demonstrate to people His perfect might and sublime wisdom. These variations offer rational evidence for the divine will, which singles out each one to have a particular color and description; for the might of Allah, as He has created them like that; and for the divine wisdom and mercy. Al-Saadi: 688.
Question: The variation, forms, and colors of the creations reflect one of Allah's Attributes. What is it?
Ar-Rabí bin Anas said: "Whoever does not fear Allah, is not a person of knowledge." Ibn Masoud said: "Fear of Allah, the Almighty, is sufficient as knowledge, and being deceived concerning Him is sufficient as ignorance."
Mujahid said: "The true Faqih is one who fears Allah." Al-Qurtubi: 17/375-376.
Question: What is the prominent trait that distinguishes the true student of knowledge?
(The people of knowledge): Those who are knowledgeable about Allah and His Sharia, where their fear of Allah is commensurate with the amount of their knowledge. As for other people of knowledge that is not related to knowing Allah, and His reward and punishment the way it should be, then their knowledge will not bring them closer to Allah. Ibn Ashur: 22/304.
Question: Who is the true person of knowledge?
This verse includes the Quran reciters, since they recite the Book of Allah and establish prayer, even if they do not reflect on the Quran, as the recital itself has a share of the light of Allah’s Words. Ibn Ashur: 22/297.
Question: Is the reciter of the Quran rewarded even if he does not reflect on it?
This proves that they are sincere in their deeds and that there are no bad intentions or evil aims behind it. Al-Saadi: 689.
Question: What is meant by: (hoping for a deal that will suffer no loss)?
