The lesson here is to warn against falling into the same situation as theirs after starting the fight or when it was enjoined upon them. Ibn Ashur: 2/484.

Al-Baqarah Verses 0 - 246

A reminder to the Muslim nation not to initiate war, but rather to defend its right to establish Islam, as Allah said: (Permission [to fight] is given to those who are fought because they were oppressed), [22:39]. It is the right of the believer to refuse war and not pursue it, because if he does and is given the command to fight, he may turn away just as these Israelites did except for few of them. Al-Biqai: 1/470.
Question: Primarily, we should always start by calling others to Islam, however, when does Jihad become obligatory?

Al-Baqarah Verses 0 - 246

Allah, the Almighty, reveals that they attributed their will to fight to their own anger at being expelled. Only those who fight in the cause of Allah fight so that His word is the highest throughout the land. Al-Biqai: 1/472.
Question: One of the reasons that Allah abandons a fighter is his insincerity. Explain.

Al-Baqarah Verses 0 - 246

When fighting was enjoined upon them and they saw the truth and their thoughts went to facing the war, they (turned away), meaning that their intentions became distorted and their resolve weakened. This is the nature of nations living in luxury and inclined toward ease, they wish for war but when they face it, they yield to their nature, and turn away from war. Ibn Atiyah: 1/331.
Question: What is the risk to a society leading a luxurious way of life?

Al-Baqarah Verses 0 - 247

That is: He is more perfect in knowledge and stature than you. Hence, the king should have knowledge, a good appearance, and great strength in his body and soul. Ibn Kathir: 1/285.
Question: This verse contains some attributes that a king should have. What are they?

Al-Baqarah Verses 0 - 247

The increase in knowledge is mentioned before the increase in physique because mental virtues have far greater value than physical ones. In fact, there is almost no comparison between the two. Al-Alusi: 2/167.
Question: Why is the increase in knowledge mentioned before the increase in physique?

Al-Baqarah Verses 0 - 247

Meaning: Do not rule out his kingship over you due to his poverty and low lineage. That is because: First: The whole matter rests on Allah's selection, and He chose him since Allah Knows what is best for you. Second: The basis for this choice is knowledge so he can handle the governing issues, and a good physique so he can be a strong leader in war against your enemies. Al-Alusi: 2/167.
Question: When selecting the right people, what is the difference between divine standards and human ones?
