This is what they asked for when they asked for a part of heaven to fall upon them. Allah made their punishment in the form of intense heat which overwhelmed them for seven days, and nothing could protect them from it. Then He sent a cloud to shade them, so they ran toward it to seek its shade from the heat. When all of them had gathered underneath it, Allah sent sparks of fire, flames and intense heat upon them, and caused the earth to convulse beneath them, and He sent against them a mighty blast that destroyed their souls. Ibn Kathir: 3/335.
Question: The Punishment of people of Shu'ayb was what they asked for. Explain.
One may ask: Why is the above-mentioned verse repeated after every story? The answer is: It is more assertive in taking heed, and alerting to the hearts. Moreover, each story is an independent narration on its own, hence, each ends with the same as the next one. Ibn Juzay: 2/123.
Question: Why is the above-mentioned verse repeated after every story?
The One Who sent it down is the Originator of the heavens and the earth, Who sustains the entire universe, both the upper and lower realms. As He cared for them by guiding them to what is in their best interests in worldly terms and their physical well-being, He also cares for them by guiding them to what leads to well-being in religious terms and in the hereafter. One of the greatest signs of His care for them is the sending down of this noble Book that contains much goodness and abundant blessings. In it, there is guidance to that which is in people’s best interests in this world and the Hereafter, and righteous manners and attitudes that is not found in any other book. Al-Saadi: 597-598.
Question: What is learned from describing Allah in this verse as (the Lord of the worlds)?
Think about how these sublime virtues were combined in this noble Book. For it is the best of books, brought down by the best of the angels, to the best of mankind, to the best part of him -namely his heart- to the best nation brought forth for mankind, in the best, most eloquent and richest of languages, namely clear Arabic tongue. Al-Saadi: 598.
Question: Describe the virtues of the Holy Quran.
With regard to anything about which there is confusion, the matter should be referred to people of experience and knowledge, so that their word may be proof against others, just as the magicians who were highly skilled in the area of magic confirmed that the miracles of Moses were true and were not magic. After that, no attention is to be paid to the words of the ignorant. Al-Saadi: 598.
Question: The knowledge of the scholars of Children of Israel is considered enough evidence of the truthfulness of this Quran. Why?
Meaning: So that we believe and accept. They will wish to go back to worldly life and given respite. Al-Baghawi: 3/373.
Question: What will the denier wish for when he witness the punishment?
Meaning: The time length of their respite will not benefit them if it is followed by punishment, even if the respite is long, since every awaited event is near. Ibn Juzay: 2/124.
Question: Does a long lifetime benefit a person if he continues to commit sins?
