(Are men), is indicative of their high drives, good intentions and firm resolves by which they became attached to the mosques that are the house of Allah on His earth, and places for worshiping Him, thanking Him, believing in His Oneness and exalting Him. Ibn Kathir: 3/284.
Question: Allah describes those who are attached to the mosques as (men). What is indication of that?
Many of the Prophet's (ﷺ) Companions said: "This verse was revealed about the traders in the market, who when they heard the call for prayer, they left all distractions and hastened to prayer." When Salem bin Abdullah saw the traders coming to the prayer, he said: "These are whom Allah meant when He said: (Neither commerce nor sale distracts from the remembrance of Allah)”. Al-Qurtubi: 15/286.
Question: What are the traits of men whom Allah praised in this verse?
Because forsaking worldly matters is very hard for most people, and the love of earning by means of various kinds of trade is dear to them; giving it up is very hard for most of them, and it may not come naturally to them to give precedence to the rights of Allah over that. Allah mentions what will motivate them to do it by means of encouragement and warnings, (They fear a Day in which the hearts and eyes will [fearfully] turn about). Al-Saadi: 569.
Question: The verse ends with (They fear a Day in which the hearts and eyes will turn about). Why?
Allah mentions the reward on good deeds, and did not mention the recompense on the bad deeds -even though he will recompense for them- for two reasons: First: This is meant to be an encouragement. Second: It is a description of people who do not commit major sins, and thus, their minor ones are forgiven. Al-Qurtubi: 15/304.
Question: Allah mentions the reward for good deeds without mentioning of misdeeds. Why?
The disbeliever thinks that he is doing something good, and that he has achieved something, but when Allah judges him on the Day of Resurrection, and brings him to account and examines his deeds, he will find that nothing has been accepted at all, either because of a lack of sincere belief, or because he did not follow the proper ways of Sharia, as Allah says, (We will turn to whatever deeds they did and turn them into scattered dust). [25:23]. Ibn Kathir: 3/286.
Question: What will be the reason for rejecting deeds on the Day of Resurrection?
After mentioning the believers, Allah presents two examples of the disbelievers' deeds, the first describes the status of their deeds in the Hereafter, and that they will not benefit from them. In fact, their reward will fade away like a mirage, which is the appearance of a sheet of running water on the ground due to sun light during midday time. Ibn Juzay: 2/94.
Question: The polytheists perform many acts of worship but with shirk. How will their deeds be judged on the Day of Resurrection?
Among all creatures, the birds are singled out for mention because they are between heavens and earth, thus, they are outside the rules that govern both. Al-Qurtubi: 15/306.
Question: After mentioning heavens and earth, Allah mentions the birds. Why?
