The sailing of ships is singled out for mention here because it is the manifest of its subjugation, for if it was not for the inspiration to build the ships as such, they would have drowned. Ibn Ashur: 17/322.
Question: Among all attributes of ships, the sailing is singled out for mention in this verse. Why?
(And He holds the sky), this is a favor from Allah upon the people to keep them safe from what could ruin their lives. (Except by His permission), this is a cautionary alert that induces hope and fear. Ibn Ashur: 17/323.
Question: The verse combines hope and fear. Explain.
(Indeed, Allah is Ever Gracious and Most Merciful to people), He is more merciful to them than their parents and more than their own selves. Hence, He wants what is good for them, whereas they want what is evil and harmful for themselves. By His mercy, He has subjugated all these things for them. Al-Saadi: 545.
Question: The verse ends with (Allah is Ever Gracious and Most Merciful). Why?
Meaning: Mankind is ungrateful because he denies the signs that point to the power of Allah and His Oneness. It is also said: Allah says that because most people are ungrateful as He says that in another verse: (And few of My servants are grateful) [34:13]. Al-Qurtubi: 14/442.
Question: Explain why mankind is described as being ungrateful.
Meaning: Do not let those who reject you dispute with you and object to some of what you have brought to them, on the basis of their corrupt thinking, like saying, (Trade is just like usury) [2:275], and similar objections to which there is no need to answer, when they are denying the message. If the one who raises these objections whilst denying the message of the Messenger (ﷺ) claims that he is arguing in order to learn and find the right answer, it should be said to him: What we discuss with you is whether the message is sound or not, otherwise his limiting the discussion to this issue is indicative of his stubbornness and attempts to frustrate you. Al-Saadi: 545.
Question: The verse contains guidance on debating those who dispute some Sharia rules. Explain.
This verse contains a good etiquette which is taught by Allah to His servants, when responding to those who quarrel with them in stubbornness, not to answer nor debate them, but respond with this statement that Allah taught His Prophet (ﷺ). Al-Qurtubi: 14/445.
Question: Explain the etiquette of dialogue with one who argues in stubbornness.
(Say) O Muhammad to these people, (Then shall I inform you of [what is] worse than that? [It is] the Fire which Allah has promised those who disbelieve), the fire and wrath and torment of Allah are far worse than that with which you are trying to scare the believing allies of Allah in this world. The punishment in the Hereafter for these deeds of yours is worse than that what you do to the believers. Ibn Kathir: 5/396.
Question: The verse contains consolation to the oppressed believers and a threat to the wrongdoers. Explain.
