ﯩ ١١٠ ١١٠ ﯫ ﯬ ﯭ ﯮ ﯯ ﯰ ﯱ ﯲ ﯳ ﯴ
ﯵ ١١١ ١١١ ﯷ ﯸ ﯹ ﯺ ﯻ ﯼ ﯽ ﯾ
ﯿ ﰀ ﰁ ١١٢ ١١٢ ﰃ ﰄ ﰅ ﰆ ﰇ
ﰈ ﰉ ﰊ ﰋ ﰌ ﰍ ﰎ ﰏ ﰐ ١١٣ ١١٣
كَذَٰلِكَ نَقُصُّ عَلَيۡكَ مِنۡ أَنۢبَآءِ مَا قَدۡ سَبَقَۚ وَقَدۡ ءَاتَيۡنَٰكَ مِن لَّدُنَّا ذِكۡرٗا ٩٩
What has been narrated about past nations is not intended for a pastime, or entertaining the listeners, rather, it is intended to admonish, remind, and awaken the consciences of Arab polytheists to heed the lesson from this narration. Ibn Ashur: 16/302.
Question: What is the intention of narrating the stories of past nations in the Quran?
وَقَدۡ ءَاتَيۡنَٰكَ مِن لَّدُنَّا ذِكۡرٗا ٩٩
Namely this Holy Quran, which is a reminder of narrations of the past and future, and a reminder that makes one reflect on what Allah possesses of perfect names and attributes, through which one may be reminded of rulings, commands, prohibitions and requital. Al-Saadi: 512.
Question: Why is the Quran called a (Reminder)?
يَتَخَٰفَتُونَ بَيۡنَهُمۡ إِن لَّبِثۡتُمۡ إِلَّا عَشۡرٗا ١٠٣ نَّحۡنُ أَعۡلَمُ بِمَا يَقُولُونَ إِذۡ يَقُولُ أَمۡثَلُهُمۡ طَرِيقَةً إِن لَّبِثۡتُمۡ إِلَّا يَوۡمٗا ١٠٤
Meaning: Some will say to others privately: "You only stayed ten nights in worldly life." They will say that because they belittle the timespan of this world. It is also said that they mean the time they spent in their graves. (The most discerning among them will say, "You stayed no more than a day"), the most knowledgeable among them will say: "You stayed for one day only," thus, he belittles the time even more than they did. Ibn Juzay: 2/24.
Question: How does this verse indicate the insignificance of this worldly life?
يَتَخَٰفَتُونَ بَيۡنَهُمۡ إِن لَّبِثۡتُمۡ إِلَّا عَشۡرٗا ١٠٣ نَّحۡنُ أَعۡلَمُ بِمَا يَقُولُونَ إِذۡ يَقُولُ أَمۡثَلُهُمۡ طَرِيقَةً إِن لَّبِثۡتُمۡ إِلَّا يَوۡمٗا ١٠٤
What this signifies is great regret at how they wasted that short time and spent it careless and negligent, turning away from that which would have benefitted them and turning towards that which harmed them, and now requital has come and the warning of punishment will inevitably be fulfilled. So, there is nothing left but regret and calls for doom and destruction. Al-Saadi: 513.
Question: What benefit does one gain from learning about the criminals in this situation?
وَعَنَتِ ٱلۡوُجُوهُ لِلۡحَيِّ ٱلۡقَيُّومِۖ وَقَدۡ خَابَ مَنۡ حَمَلَ ظُلۡمٗا ١١١
The word (faces) is used to represent people since the effects of humility appear on the face. Al-Qurtubi: 14/142.
Question: The word (faces) is used in this verse to represent people. Why?
وَمَن يَعۡمَلۡ مِنَ ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ وَهُوَ مُؤۡمِنٞ فَلَا يَخَافُ ظُلۡمٗا وَلَا هَضۡمٗا ١١٢
(While he is a believer), since no deed will be accepted without belief. Al-Qurtubi: 14/143.

وَكَذَٰلِكَ أَنزَلۡنَٰهُ قُرۡءَانًا عَرَبِيّٗا وَصَرَّفۡنَا فِيهِ مِنَ ٱلۡوَعِيدِ لَعَلَّهُمۡ يَتَّقُونَ أَوۡ يُحۡدِثُ لَهُمۡ ذِكۡرٗا ١١٣
This description implies praise for the Quran because the Arabic language is the most eloquent and expressive among all languages. Ibn Ashur: 16/314.
