It is said that human souls are three types: (A persistent enjoiner of evil), which tends toward following its whim because of sins and wrongdoings. (A self-reproaching soul), which commits sins and repents, so it has good and evil, but when it does evil, it reverts and repents, therefore, it is called "reproaching" since it reproaches itself and wavers between good and evil. (A tranquil soul), which likes to do good deeds, wants them, and detests evil deeds; and that became its demeanor and habit. Ibn Taimyah: 4/45.
Question: What are the types of human souls?
Indeed, you are today established [in position] and trusted), this answer from the king indicates that Joseph (u) had spoken to him in a wise and eloquent manner. So, when the king witnessed his articulate speech and original views, he realized that he was worthy of his trust and of being around him. Ibn Ashur: 13/7.
Question: What is the reason for the king's saying to Joseph (u): (Indeed, you are today established [in position] and trusted)?
Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) had censured the idea of one requesting to be appointed to an official position; however, the request of Joseph (u), (Appoint me over the storehouses of the land) was a way for him to call them to Allah, act justly among the people, eliminate injustice, and do good which they [would not], even though they were not aware of his qualification, but he knew through his interpretation of the dream how the conditions of the people would turn out, which made the difference between this case and what was censured by the Prophet (ﷺ). Ibn Taimyah: 4/55-56.
Question: How did Joseph (u) request to be appointed even though it is censured to do that?
This verse proves that it is permissible for one to talk about his knowledge and virtue. Al-Mawardi said: Talking about the traits of oneself is not permitted with all traits in general, but limited to traits that are relative to the situation, or linked to justifying earning, but forbidden for everything else because it is a display of self-admiration and show. If a virtuous man refrains from it, it will be more suitable to his virtue, however, the condition in which Joseph (u) was necessitated his statement, and the fact that he was hoping to be united with his family. Al-Qurtubi: 11/386.
Question: Is it permissible for a person to speak favorably and praise himself?
(We do not allow to be lost the reward of those who do good), Ibn Abbas and Wahb said: This refers to those who are patient, since he was patient at the bottom of the well, when he was taken as a slave, when he entered the prison and when he was called to do forbidden action by a woman. Al-Qurtubi: 11/390.
Question: What are the types of patience that Joseph (u) displayed?
It is through piety that both major and minor sins are abandoned, and through perfect faith that the heart believes in what Allah has commanded it to believe, followed by the deeds of the heart and physical actions, both obligatory and recommended. Al-Saadi: 401.
Question: Why are piety and faith important to reach the reward of the Hereafter?
It is said that he wanted to show them his generosity by returning their trading goods, and give them an incentive to come back through benevolence. (So that they might know it), so that they may recognize our caring for them. Al-Baghawi: 2/475.
Question: Shed some light on the generosity of Joseph (u) toward his brothers and his keenness to see them?
