(Do not take your fathers and brothers as allies), who are the closest of people to you, so it is even more appropriate that you should not take as allies other people (if they choose disbelief over belief). Al-Saadi: 332.
Question: Allah singles out the fathers and brothers for mention, why?
This is a threat to whoever prefers his family, wealth or house over migration and Jihad in the cause of Allah. Ibn Juzay: 1/354.
Question: What is the risk of being over-attached to one's family, wealth or house?
This verse provides the greatest evidence for the obligation to love Allah and His Messenger (ﷺ), and to give them precedence over love of anything else. The sign of that is, if a person is presented with two options, one of which is loved by Allah and His Messenger (ﷺ), but he has no inclination toward it, and the other option is something that he loves and desires, but it will cause him to miss out on or will detract from the thing that is loved by Allah and His Messenger (ﷺ); if he gives precedence to what he himself desires over what Allah loves, then it is an indication that he is a wrongdoer who is not doing what he must. Al-Saadi: 332.
Question: How can a servant prove his of love of Allah and His Messenger (ﷺ)?
Among all deeds that Allah loves of His servants, He singles out Jihad for mention because of its high status, and the risks associated with it, such as loss of life, spending of wealth, and leaving families behind, which make people more likely to lag behind when called for it; especially that when this Surah was revealed after the battle of Tabuk in which the hypocrites and some Muslims did not participate. Ibn Ashur: 10/153.
Question: In this verse, Allah singles out Jihad for mention, why?
Allah, the Exalted, reminds the believers how He favored and blessed them by granting them victory in many battles with His Messenger (ﷺ). Allah mentions that victory comes from Him, by His aid and decree, not because of their numbers or adequate supplies. Ibn Kathir: 2/328.
Question: What is the benefit of ascribing victory to Allah, the Almighty?
In the battle of Hunayn, the Muslim army consisted of twelve thousand soldiers, and some of them said: "We will not be defeated today because of our number." So, Allah wanted to show their incapacity, and they started running away from Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) who stood firmly on his ride with few of his Companions, and prayed to Allah to send help. He then picked up a handful of earth, hurled it at the faces of the disbelievers while saying, "May your faces be shameful." He called his people to return to the battlefield, which they did, and Allah defeated the disbelievers. Ibn Juzay: 1/354.
Question: There is a lesson, In this verse, for the nation and for the fighters. Explain.
Some of the Muslim fighters said: "We will not be defeated today because of our number.” So, Allah forsaken them to their words, and they were defeated at the beginning of the battle until they came back at their enemy. Al-Baghawi: 10/149.
Question: Describe the risk of self-admiration on individuals and groups?
