Meaning: A test from Allah to you where He grants you so these blessings so that it becomes evident who among you will be grateful and obedient to Him, and who will be distracted and dedicated to them instead. Ibn Kathir: 2/288.
Question: When do properties and children become a blessing? When do they become an ordeal?
Meaning: If you have reason and sound thinking, then you should give precedence to His great reward over small, transient, diminishing pleasure. The wise person weighs things up and gives precedence to what is more deserving of being given precedence. Al-Saadi: 319.
Question: This verse provides a basis for reconciliation between the adornments of this world and the bliss of the Hereafter. Explain in the light of this verse.
This is a warning against betrayal to which the love of wealth lead, such as taking illegally part of the spoils of war, etc. Here, properties are mentioned first since they are the more likely reason for betrayal in this case. Ibn Ashur: 9/324.
Question: In this verse, properties precede children in mention. Why ?
Certainly, those who have fear Allah by following what He ordains and abstaining from what He forbids, will be guided to differentiate between truth and falsehood. Ibn Kathir: 2/289.
Question: Distinguishing between truth and falsehood requires a criterion, how can we attain it?
(If you fear Allah, He will grant you a criterion), it means that Allah will make for him a way out from skepticism about the religion. 'Ikrimah (a student of Ibn Abbas) said: "A deliverance from all fears." Ibn Ishaq said: "A differentiation between truth and falsehood." Al-Baghawi: 2/214.
Question: What is meant by (criterion)? How can one attain it?
(Nor would Allah punish them while they seek forgiveness), Allah would not punish them if they believe and seek forgiveness, as seeking forgiveness is a shield against punishment. One of the righteous predecessors said: "We used to have two shields against punishment, which are: Presence of the Prophet (ﷺ), and seeking forgiveness. After the Prophet (ﷺ) passed away, the first shield is gone while the other one still remains." Ibn Juzay: 1/343.
Question: In light of this verse, explain the importance of seeking forgiveness.
Allah makes clear that He does not punish one who is seeking His forgiveness because asking for Allah's forgiveness wipes out the sin which is the cause for punishment, and so the punishment is warded off. Ibn Taimyah: 3/268.
Question: Allah does not punish one who is seeking His forgiveness. Why?
