(He said, "I am better than him), this was how Iblis reasoned his refusal to prostrate to Adam (). Iblis' objection to Allah's command by alleging that being superior to Adam (), then he should not be commanded to prostrate to him. This was a refusal to submit to Allah's command, which constituted disbelief, however it is not disbelief out of denial of Allah. Ibn Juzay: 1/297.
Question: A creature's arrogance entices him, sometimes, to refuse to submit to the commands of Allah by allegedly using reasoning, thus he becomes a disbeliever. Explain in light of this verse.
This argument of Iblis, ("I am better than him; You created me from fire and created him from clay"), was false because he refused to submit to a clear command from Allah by using analogical deduction. Ibn Taimyah: 3/138.
Question: Why was Iblis' argument false?
Iblis lied by regarding the substance of fire as being superior to the substance of clay or mud, for clay has the characteristics of humility, tranquility and dignity, and from it emerge the blessings of the earth, such as trees and all kinds of plants. As for fire, it has the characteristics of fickleness and capriciousness, and it burns. Al-Saadi: 284.
Question: Iblis was mistaken in regarding the substance of fire as being superior to the substance of clay. Why?
(For it is not for you to be arrogant therein), this is because Paradise's inhabitants are the humble angels. (So get out; indeed, you are of the debased) of the humiliated. This proves that whoever disobeys Allah becomes humiliated. Al-Qurtubi: 9/169.
Question: What are the traits of those who are close to Allah? What are the traits of those who are faraway from Him?
(So get out; indeed, you are of the debased), of the humiliated and disgraced as a just recompense for his ill intentions, by giving him the opposite of what he intended. Ibn Kathir: 2/195.
Question: Iblis was punished by humiliation and disgrace. Why?
(Then I will come against them from their front and from their back, from their right and from their left, and You will not find most of them grateful), Ibn Abbas (t) and Ikrimah said about this verse: Iblis did not say "from above them" because he knew that Allah is above them. Ibn Taimyah: 3/140.
Question: Iblis did not mention "from above them." Why?
(Of their private parts), in the original Arabic text, the word used for private parts is (saw'ah), which is derived from a root word that means "shame" in Arabic to indicate that exposing one's private parts is a shameful act. Al-Qurtubi: 9/175.
Question: In the original text, the word (saw’ah) is used for private parts. Why?
