Meaning: If you doubt that, then travel through the land and see what was the fate of the deniers, for you will never find anything but people who were destroyed. The kind of travel enjoined here is travel in both a spiritual and physical sense, which will lead to drawing lessons; as for merely looking without learning any lesson, that is of no benefit. Al-Saadi: 251.
Question: What is the difference between a believer and a disbeliever when witnessing the ruins of destroyed nations?
This is a gentle call from Allah to those who are turned away to come back to Him by stating that He is Merciful to His servants, does not rush to punish the guilty, and accepts their return in repentance. Al-Baghawi: 2/10.
Question: What is the intended meaning of this verse?
Allah extended His mercy and kindness to all of them; He encompassed them in His mercy and blessings, and He took it upon Himself and decreed for Himself that His mercy should take precedence over His wrath, and that giving is dearer to Him than withholding. Allah Has opened the gates of mercy to all of His servants, unless they close the gates to themselves by sinning; He Has called them to His mercy unless they are prevented from seeking it by their sins and faults. Al-Saadi: 251.
Question: What prevents a servant from benefiting from Allah's mercy?
One may wonder: If Allah Has the dominion of heavens and earth, why does not He rush to punish those who live in His dominion yet associate partners with Him? A disbeliever may say: "If what you said is true, then Allah would have punished us!" On the other hand, the believer finds slow the coming of punishment of those disbelievers. Hence, Allah answers both by saying: (He has taken it upon Himself to be Merciful), by his grace, his mercy consists of a complete mercy for all of His believing servants, and a transient mercy which is a respite for the disbelievers. Ibn Ashur: 7/151.
Question: What is the link between this verse (He has taken it upon Himself to be Merciful) and the verse before?
Resting is singled out for mention because it manifests a greater blessing. Al-Baghawi: 2/11.
Question: Why is resting singled out for mention?
Being (The first to submit) may refer to strength and steadfastness since the first person in any action usually is the most dedicated and attached to it, as Allah says about Moses (), (And I am the first of the believers) [7:143]. It is well-known that Moses () was the first believer, but he meant that after falling unconscious, his faith became the firmest among people. Ibn Ashur: 7/158.
Question: What is meant by (The first)? What can you learn from that?
Allah says, (He is Most Capable of all things) after saying, (and if He grants you good) to indicate that His favors and blessings cannot be prevented by anyone; similarly, He says, (And if He wants good for you, none can withhold His bounty) [10:107]. Al-Shanqiti: 1/475.
Question: The verse concludes with: (He is Most Capable of all things). Why?
