The scholars said: "This Surah, (Al-An'am), was revealed as a whole at once because it is the basis on which debating polytheists, innovators (misguided in interpreting Sharia), and those who deny resurrection—is founded." Al-Qurtubi: 8/312.
Question: Why was Surat (Al-An'am) revealed as a whole at once?
Meaning: Be sincere in offering your praise and gratitude to the One Who created you all, the heavens and earth. Do not associate with Him anyone or anything since He is the only worthy of your praises due to His favors upon you and not those whom you are worshiping and associating with Him. Al-Tabari: 11/247.
Question: Why should one be sincere in praising Allah?
In the Arabic text, Allah mentions darkness in a plural form because there are so many different types of darkness, but He mentions light in a singular form, because the path that leads to Allah is one, not many. It is the path that requires knowledge of the truth and acting upon it. Al-Saadi: 250.
Question: Darkness is mentioned in a plural form while light is mentioned in a singular form. Why?
Allah describes the term for resurrection as (known only to Him) because He kept the knowledge of the Hour unto Himself. Ibn Atiyah: 2/267.
Question: Allah describes the term for resurrection as (known only to Him.) Why?
Turning away by neglecting to reflect on the signs that will lead them to the Oneness of Allah, such as the creation of heavens, earth and everything in between. Al-Baghawi: 2/10.
Question: How is turning away from the signs of Allah, the Almighty, come about?
Therefore, beware of the same end that might befall you, for you are not dearer to Allah than these previous nations, but the Messenger whom you defied is dearer to Allah than the Messengers they defied. Thus, you are more liable than them to receive torment, if it was not for Allah's mercy and kindness. Ibn Kathir: 2/117.
Question: What is Allah's way with societies whose evil is more than good?
Meaning: We had given them abundance of favors but they were ungrateful. (Then We destroyed them for their sins), they were destroyed for their disbelief because sins are the cause of punishment and cessation of favors. (and brought forth after them other generations): We created new generation afterward, thus, let these be warned of destruction too. Al-Qurtubi: 8/326.
Question: What is the cause for Allah's punishment?
