Al-Ma'idah Verses 0 - 98

Allah made mercy an attribute reflected in His Holy Names, but He made the punishment an action of His, not included in His Holy Names. Ibn Taimyah: 2/561.
Question: The verse induces fear and hope. Explain.

Al-Ma'idah Verses 0 - 98

Meaning: Let these contrasting attributes be in your hearts with certainty and conviction, knowing that He is severe in punishment, both in this world and in the Hereafter, to those who disobey Him, and that He is all-Forgiving and Merciful toward those who repent and obey Him. This knowledge will instill in your heart fear of His punishment and hope for His forgiveness and reward, thus you will conduct yourself in the light of these two principles, fear and hope. Al-Saadi: 245.
Question: What benefit is gained from knowing that Allah is severe in penalty and that He is Forgiving and Merciful?

Al-Ma'idah Verses 0 - 99

(The Messenger's duty is only to convey the message), except for conveying the message, the Messenger does not control guidance, success nor recompense. Al-Qurtubi: 8/225.
Question: What is the duty of one who calls others to the path of Allah?

Al-Ma'idah Verses 0 - 100

Evil does not equate good in value, expenditure, status nor direction. Good sets to the right while evil sets to the left. Good leads to Paradise while evil leads to Hellfire. Al-Qurtubi: 8/226.
Question: Explain why evil does not equate good?

Al-Ma'idah Verses 0 - 100

To Allah, the disbelievers and the believers are not equal, even if there is an abundance of disbelievers to the point of making one impressed by them. Even when the faithful ones are fewer in number, they are, in fact, the real winners of Allah's reward on the Day of Resurrection. The disbelievers, on the other hand, are the losers even though they are abundant in numbers. One should not be impressed by the abundant number of people who disobey Allah while He gives them respite and does not rush to punish them because eventually the eternal bliss is for the faithful. Al-Tabari: 11/96.
Question: A wise person is not impressed with the abundance of disbelievers. Explain in light of this verse.

Al-Ma'idah Verses 0 - 100

(Even if the abundance of evil may impress you) for it is of no benefit to the one who possesses it; rather, it is harmful in both spiritual and worldly terms. (So fear Allah, O people of understanding, so that you may be successful) here, Allah issues a command to men of understanding - that is, people of mature thinking and wisdom. They are addressed here because they are the ones to whom attention is paid, and it is hoped that there is good in them. Then, Allah makes clear that prosperity depends on fearing Him, which means complying with His commands and prohibitions. Whoever fears Allah will prosper, but whoever does not will incur loss and miss out on gains. Al-Saadi: 245.
Question: Only the people of understanding are addressed in this verse. Why?

Al-Ma'idah Verses 0 - 102

They asked about these things not to gain guidance, but only to mock and defy. Ibn Kathir: 2/100.
Question: What is the difference between a good question and a bad one?
