This is by Allah's grace and bounty; having mentioned the evil deeds, faults and false arguments of the People of the Book, He calls them to repent, and tells them that if they believe in Allah, His angels, all of His Books and all of His Messengers, and avoid sin, their bad deeds will be expiated, no matter what they are, and He would admit them to Gardens of Pleasure. Al-Saadi: 238.
Question: This verse gives hope to sinful Muslims. Explain.
(And if they had upheld the Torah and the Gospel), upholding them is by learning and practicing. Ibn Juzay: 1/244.
Question: Upholding the Book of Allah is by two things. What are they?
(From above them and from below their feet) Ibn Abbas () and others said, "It means: rain and vegetation." This indicates that they were in a drought. It is also said, “We would increase their provisions continuously." The use of the words (above) and (below) is for showing abundance of provisions. This is similar to this verse, (Whoever fears Allah, He will make a way out for him ` and He will provide for him from where he does not expect) [65:2-3]. Al-Qurtubi: 8/88.
Question: This verse provides a remedy for poverty. What is it?
This verse indicates that Jewish destitution is due to Allah's wrath upon them because they neglected the Torah and rejected the Gospel and the Quran, which led to the certain divine vengeance against them after the revelation of the Holy Quran. Ibn Ashur: 6/253.
Question: Allah's wrath evokes destitution. Explain in light of this verse.
This verse is the clearest refutation of the Shias' claim that the Quran is more than what was collected by Abu Bakr () and transcribed by Othman (), and that the Prophet (ﷺ) had given most of the Quran to Ali bin Abi Talib () who bequeathed it to his descendants. Moreover, they claim that Ali's portion of the Quran was as big as a camel's load and it is hidden with their long awaited Mehdi (the guided one). Ibn Ashur: 6/260.
Question: This verse is the clearest refutation of the Shias' claim that the Quran is incomplete. Explain.
This is a confirmation that the Prophet (ﷺ) does not speak out of his own desire, rather he conveys everything he hears through a revelation sent down to him. It also confirms that everything he speaks is revealed to him and not learned from others or deduced by him. Ibn Taimyah: 2/507.
Question: This verse proves that the Prophet's (ﷺ) Sunnah is revealed to him by Allah. How?
Meaning: Your duty is only to convey the message, so do not grieve for anyone’s evasion since that is not because of any shortcoming from you, rather it is because of his lack of reason, and Allah Has put a seal upon his heart because He knew that he is not worthy of being guided due to his corrupt nature. Al-Biqai: 2/503.
Question: State the general meaning of this verse. May Allah enlighten us.
