This is the effect of one sin after another. Mujahid said: When a person sins, the sin encircles his heart, then he sins again, and the second sin encircles his heart until the sins cover his heart. Bakr bin Abdulla said: When a servant sins, his heart will have a hole as if it were pierced by a needle, then when he sins again, the same thing will repeat until his heart becomes like a sifter or screen that does not hold goodness or keep righteousness. Al-Qurtubi: 22/143.
Question: What is the stain of the heart? How does it reach the heart?
Abu Hurairah narrated that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said: "Verily, when the servant sins, a black spot appears on his heart. If he seeks forgiveness and repents, his heart is polished clean. But if he returns, it increases until it covers his entire heart. And that is the stain (Ran) which Allah mentions: (No! Rather, their hearts have been stained by what they used to commit)." Al-Tabari: 24/286.
Question: Describe the effect of repentance on the stain of the heart.
Al-Husain bin Al-Fadhl said: As He barred them from His Oneness in worldly life, He will bar them from seeing Him in the Hereafter. Al-Zajjaj said: This verse proves that Allah, the Almighty, will be seen in the Hereafter. Al-Shawkani: 5/400.
Question: Why will the disbelievers be barred from seeing Allah in the Hereafter?
(The competitors), those who want to hasten to the obedience of Allah. Competition is racing against others for a valuable thing and striving against oneself to emulate and draw alongside the righteous, without causing harm to others. This reflects self honor and high aspiration. Al-Alusi: 15/283.
Question: What are the good and bad competitions mentioned in this verse?
This verse contrasts with the opening of the Surah. The defrauders strive to gather wealth through defrauding, and they will be miserable on the Day of Resurrection while the righteous will be in Bliss, and this is what they will drink, then, this is what the real competition should be for, not in defrauding in measure and weight. Al-Shanqiti: 8/463.
Question: What is the good competition and the bad one that are mentioned in this Surah?
Tasneem is the top drink in Paradise. Allah states that the drink for the righteous will be mixed with Tasneem while those who are near to Him will drink directly from Tasneem without mixing. This is because the reward fits the deed. The good deeds of those who are near to Allah are purely devoted to Him, hence, their drink will be pure. The righteous mixed their good deeds with permissible ones, and therefore, their drink will be mixed for them. Whoever kept his deeds purely to Allah, his drink will be pure, and whoever mixed his deeds, his drink will be mixed. Ibn Al-Qayim: 3/270.
Question: The drink of those who are near to Allah is pure, but the drink of the righteous is mixed. Why?
Meaning: Happy and rejoicing. This was one of the greatest signs of their delusion, that they combined the worst of deeds with a sense of being secure in this world, to the extent that it was as if they had received a covenant and promise from Allah that they would be among the blessed, and they regarded themselves as being guided and the believers as being misguided. This was a fabrication against Allah, for they dared to speak about Him without knowledge. Al-Saadi: 916.
Question: Explain the polytheists' worst offence mentioned in this verse.
