(Do you approach males), doing so is contrary to all those who belong to worlds that are made up of males and females, since none of them approach males. This warns that this horrible act goes against the nature of everything, even animals do not engage in such an abhorred act. Hence, it was a shameful act of their own invention and was never done by someone else before them. Ibn Ashur: 19/179.
Question: The verse explained the abominable nature of the actions of Lot’s people. How?
They said the like of those who came before them, their hearts resembled each other in disbelief, hence, their words became similar. Al-Saadi: 596.
Question: What is the indication of the similarity of the words of disbelievers in the past and present?
Lot (u) said: (I am one of those who utterly detest your practice), detesting means abhorring and renouncing. Allah's Prophets are His allies, they like what He likes, and detest what He detests. Ibn Taimyah: 5/49.
Question: Draw from this verse one of the important traits of Allah's allies.
(My Lord, save me and my family from what they do), save me and my family from the punishment for their actions. Lot (u) supplicated Allah, after he despaired of their faith, that he would not be affected by their punishment. Al-Qurtubi: 16/69.
Question: Explain the intense fear of Lot (u) from the coming of punishment.
(Except an old woman), she was his wife (among) those who (remained behind) in punishment, as We would not save her because of Our past decree, and for the fact that she did not follow him in the religion, but preferred her people. Al-Biqai: 14/83.
Question: Ties of faith are stronger than that of family. Explain in light of this verse.
The message of all these Prophets, as Allah relates about them, followed the same format, since they all concur with enjoining the fear of Allah, obedience to Him, sincerity in worshiping Him, and refraining from accepting a reward for conveying the message. Al-Baghawi: 3/371.
Question: What are the traits that are common to all the Messengers (p) in their preaching?
Meaning: A command to give full and complete weight, and forbidding to decrease but not increase. Apparently, increasing the measure and weight is neither enjoined, nor forbidden, which indicates that whoever does it, has done well; and whoever does not, no blame on him. Al-Alusi: 10/117.
Question: Increasing the measure and weight is neither enjoined, nor forbidden. What do we learn from that?
