Al-A'raf Verses 0 - 44

This call of the people of Paradise to the people of Hellfire is a censure and a rebuke to increase their anguish. Ibn Atiyah: 2/402.
Question: What is the benefit of the call of people of Paradise to the people of Hellfire?

Al-A'raf Verses 0 - 45

This is what caused them to deviate from the straight path and to focus on their own unlawful whims and desires, and not to believe in the resurrection or fear the punishment or hope for reward. Al-Saadi: 290.
Question: What is the effect of belief in resurrection and the Hereafter?

Al-A'raf Verses 0 - 46

Between the people of Paradise and the people of Hellfire, there will be a barrier called Al-A'raf (the Heights), which is not part of Paradise nor of Hellfire, but it overlooks both, and it is possible to look down from it and see both groups. On top of this barrier will be men who will recognize both the people of Paradise and of Hellfire (by their marks) that is, signs in them from which they may be recognized and distinguished. When they look at the people of Paradise, they will call out to them, saying, (Peace be upon you). In other words, they will greet them even though -up to this point- they will not have entered Paradise, but they will hope to enter it, and Allah will not put hope in their hearts except for the reason that He will want to bestow honor upon them. Al-Saadi: 290.
Question: Who are the people of the Heights (Al-A'raf )?

Al-A'raf Verses 0 - 48

(And the people of the Heights will call out to some men) from the people of Hellfire who were of great status in the previous life, (whom they recognize by their marks, saying, "Of no avail to you was your gathering) of wealth and children, (and [the fact] that you were arrogant) which kept you from accepting the faith. Al-Kalbi said: "While on the Heights and looking at people of Hellfire, they will call some of them saying, O Walid bin Al-Mughera, O Abu Jahl bin Hisham. Then they will look at the side of Paradise and see (who used to be) the weak and poor people such as: Salman, Suhaib, Khabbab, and Bilal." Al-Baghawi: 2/106.
Question: The criteria against which people are judged in the Hereafter are different from that of this worldly life. Explain. In light of this verse.

Al-A'raf Verses 0 - 49

This is a statement of the people of the Heights to the people of Hellfire, and (these the ones) indicates the people of Paradise. That is because the disbelievers in this life swore that Allah would never offer mercy to the believers nor care for them, but the opposite will happen. Ibn Juzay: 1/360.
Question: Extract from this verse some causes for entering Hellfire?

Al-A'raf Verses 0 - 50

This verse proves that providing drinking water is one of the best deeds. Ibn Abbas () was asked: which charity is the best? He replied: Providing drinking water; do you not see when people of Hellfire will call the people of Paradise for help, they say, (Pour upon us some water or from whatever Allah has provided you). Some followers of the Prophet's companions said: "Whoever committed many sins, then he should provide drinking water. If Allah has forgiven the sins of a man who provided water to a thirsty dog, then it is all the more so if one provides water to a believer." Al-Qurtubi: 9/233.
Question: Describe the virtue of providing drinking water?

Al-A'raf Verses 0 - 50

What is even worse for the disbelievers in this call is the fact that they can actually see the people of Paradise, which is far more disgracing and painful to them. Ibn Atiyah: 2/406.
Question: The punishment in Hellfire is both physical and mental. Explain in light of this verse.
