This verse presents a lesson for people to avoid evil companions and beware of the misdeeds that they call others to, and make them appealing to them. Ibn Ashur: 23/119.
Question: Given this verse, describe the risk of having an evil companion.
Some scholars said: If Allah, the Almighty, will not make him recognizable to him, he will not be able to know who he is, because his color and shape will have changed. Al-Qurtubi: 18/39.
Question: How will someone in Paradise recognize his old companion who is in the Fire after his color and shape is changed?
(If not for the favor of my Lord): His mercy and favor upon me for being a Muslim. (I would have been of those brought in): With you in Hellfire. Al-Baghawi: 3/661.
Question: When the believer is saved from Hellfire, is that due to his deeds and obedience only?
That is where this tree emerges, and the substance of which it is made is the worst of substances. The vileness of the place where it grows is indicative of how vile and foul this plant is. Hence, Allah draws our attention to its vile nature by mentioning where it grows and the way in which He describes its fruits. Al-Saadi: 704.
Question: What is learned from describing the tree that it grows in the bottom of the Hellfire?
This is a description of how ugly and repulsive it is. It is likened to the heads of devils, even though they have never seen them, because it is a well-established idea in people's minds that devils are ugly in appearance. Ibn Kathir: 4/12.
Question: Allah likens its fruits to something that is unknown which is the heads of devils. Why?
It is as if one asked: What brought them to this abode? Hence, Allah says: (They found their fathers astray). Al-Saadi: 704.
Question: What is the link between these two verses?
Allah describes those who went astray before them as (most of the earlier people), lest some people of weak minds become deluded by the great number of polytheists and rely on it, and to know that a great number does not justify the misguidance of the misguided, nor the sin of the sinners. Therefore, when either of them is great or few in number, it must not be a trial for those of short sight and weak minds; Allah says, (Say, "Evil and good are not equal, even if the abundance of evil may impress you") [5:100]. Ibn Ashur: 23/128.
Question: Abundance and scarcity do not indicate guidance or misguidance. Explain.
