We have tested these people, who deny the truth, and We have given them respite and bestowed upon them whatever We willed of wealth, children, long life, and akin to it, which coincided with their wishes, not because they are dear to Us, but so that they may be gradually led to their ruin in ways they do not perceive. Al-Saadi: 880.
Question: Is wealth or poverty a sign of Allah's love for the rich and dislike for the poor?
Allah punished them before their actual prevention of charity because they were firm on depriving the poor of the fruits, and swore to cut them early, which was an actual prevention of charity. There is a lesson in this for those who withhold their wealth from consoling the needy. Ibn Ashur: 29/82.
Question: Allah punished them before their actual prevention of charity. Why?
They were able to give fruits to the poor, but they intended to prevent and deprive them of it. Then, they became in a situation where they were unable to do anything except deprivation. Al-Alusi: 15/36.
Question: The people of the garden were hastily deprived of their garden. Why?
Meaning: We were deprived of the garden's fruits and goodness because we kept it from the poor, and for not saying: "If Allah wills." Al-Baghawi: 4/451.
Question: The people of the garden were deprived of goodness. Why?
(The middle one of them), the best one and closer to righteousness among them, and he was one of three brothers. In Arabic, the term, (middle) refers to the best. Allah says, (And thus We have made you a middle nation)[2:143], and (Be mindful of the prayers, especially the middle prayer)[2:238]. Ibn Ashur: 29/86.
Question: The middle brother was singled out for mention. Why?
(With their Lord), this indicates that Allah is pleased with them, and the pleasure of the Lord of the house is needed before seeing the house. Al-Biqai: 20/317.
Question: What is indicated by (With their Lord)?
They will be punished with the opposite of what they did. When they were called to prostrate in the worldly life, they refused to do so, even though they were healthy and secure. Therefore, they will be punished with the lack of ability to do so in the Hereafter. When the Almighty Lord makes Himself visible (before the believers), then the believers will fall down in prostration to Him, but no one of the disbelievers and hypocrites will be able to prostrate. Rather, their backs will become one plate. Ibn Kathir: 4/407.
Question: Why will they be prevented from prostration on that Day?
